A railway takes first step to give Surat station facelift

Surat Railway Station, is a railway station serving Surat city, beside Gotahngam, Kosad, Uttran, Udhan Jn, Bhestan, Niol and Sachin railway stations. Serving the second largest city in the Indian state of Gujarat. Surat Railway Station is also the 2nd most earning Railway Station after Mumbai of Mumbai Division,Western Railways. It is under the administrative control of Western Railway zone of the Indian Railways. It is on the Ahmedabad Railway Station-Vadodara-Mumbai rail route. The railway station was built in 1860. It is connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Indore, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Lucknow, Jaipur, Kanpur, Nagpur and all the major stations in India by a number of trains.

Jaipur Superfast Express, Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express, Karnavati Express, Paschim Express, Bandra Surat Intercity Express, Indore – Mumbai Avantika Express, Indore – Pune Express, Indore – Surat Express, August Kranti Rajdhani Express, Valsad – Kanpur via. Bhopal Express, Valsad – Sonpur via. Jabalpur Express, Gujarat Express and Mumbai-Porbandar Saurashtra Express pass through this station. Recently Surat was introduced as an halt for Mumbai Rajdhani Express.

Advance Railway Ticketing System is installed at the station to issue unreserved tickets in advance. Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) is also available. Going north, Utran Railway Station is the nearest railhead. Udhna Junction Railway Station is to the south of Surat.

Inside the Station you will find ATMs of Axis bank, State Bank, Canara Bank, Dena Bank and also ATM’s of some other bank in Main Building (Platform-1 Side). Food Express Restaurant which is opened for all 24 hours is located at 1st floor.

The nearest international airport is Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (278 km.) and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport Mumbai. The nearest domestic airport is Surat Airport.

Now railway takes first step to give Surat station facelift the Western Railways have called for request for proposal (RFP) for preparing the master plan and study report for development of Surat railway station.

Ten consultants from across the country were present in the pre-bid meeting held on Wednesday and railway officials have asked for RFP for development of railway yard with 70,000 sq metre of land to be developed on public-private partnership (PPP) basis.

s2However, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), which is looking at integrated development of the whole of railway station area, has insisted on comprehensive redevelopment.

SMC plans to redevelop nearly 2 lakh sqm land around the railway station that belongs to state government, Gujarat State Road Transport Authority (GSRTC) and local body apart from railway authority.

“In our development plan, we will see that there is no additional financial burden on either railways or local body,” said Milind Torwane, municipal commissioner.

The plan aims at resolving the traffic movement around railway station. It will also establish links for mass transportation from railway station to different parts of the city. The plan includes malls, hotels, offices, multiplexes and an activity center for tourists.

“As we have possession of majority of the land in our hands, we can right way start the work as soon as the plans are finalized,” said Jatin Shah, city engineer, SMC.
